Resurrecting Inspiration

I have been playing with these recently.

I only dared to cut an inch or an inch and a half off each...

Not entirely to good effect!

Gum trees and bark have long inspired me and I had an idea which I fear is doomed (aren't I brave showing you my failures)!

I've worked out what's wrong I think- colours too close and scale of strips is wrong, but I am confident something new will emerge.- so thinking again...

And trying to tell myself that this is how I learn to be creative...

Trouble is... I don't think I'll be able to find it without cutting into that lovely stack a bit more daringly...!

  1. A brave effort, and I think it is not too far off of what you are trying to achieve.

I love the leaves showing through from beneath the top fabric, and especially love the little edge of red that shows through. It's a great detail that I would never have thought of.

As cool as an idea it is to use so many colours, I think you could make quite a bold statement using just a few. Below is a link to a picture that I found in a google images search. I think you could make a quilt that looks nearly identical to this picture by simply choosing one colour for the sky, one colour for the wood, one colour for the leaves and a reddish colour for the edges of the leaves (as you did in your sewing, above).

Good luck. I love where your going with this. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

  5. Gorgeous fabrics! It's hard when you have a brilliant idea but it's just out of reach. I'm often frustrated because my ability to come up with designs exceeds my actual sewing skills (and time available). I'm sure you'll get there - maybe sleep on it. That always helps me (and is possibly why I get all sorts of crazy ideas in the shower or when I'm drying my hair or doing other such mundane tasks).

  6. Hi Camilla! I am loving your experiment! Just keep trying, your work will become even better! Lots of fun " playing " . ( For me experimentation is about fun and learning, not so much the final result )

  9. It's frustrating when experimentation cuts into your stash! Even if you haven't got the effect you wanted you're still making something really interesting, and I'm looking forward to seeing more:-)

  10. I'm also intrigued...! But I wouldn't call them failures - maybe early prototypes? :) And remember, it's only fabric. There's always more where that came from.

  11. Beautiful, shimmery shot cottons! I think it looks super cool, I'm interested to see how this project evolves, seems like you're on track for something super original.

  12. I'll be interested to see where you end up with this. The colors and fabrics are so beautiful and you capture that tension between timidity and the need for boldness in starting a new creative project. Though I am not a quilter, I have been there so many times! Loving to just look at the materials and biting my lip before tearing into them to make something new. Good luck!
